This month in our yoga practice, we’ve been gently tuning into the Air Element—a soft yet powerful energy that invites us to expand, elevate, and exhale.
Air is movement.
It is breath.
It is spaciousness.
It cannot be seen, but it is everywhere.
It surrounds us, moves through us, and connects us.
In yoga and many healing traditions, the air element is deeply connected to the heart chakra—Anahata—our energetic centre of love, compassion, acceptance, and inner harmony.
As we’ve moved, breathed, and softened through our practice this month, the invitation has been to explore how we can open our hearts more fully towards ourselves, others, and life.
🌬 Understanding the Air Element
Air represents lightness, freedom, inspiration, and the power of the invisible forces in our lives—our thoughts, feelings, intuition, and breath.
It governs movement and communication.
When we are in flow with the air element, we feel light-hearted, open-minded, and emotionally spacious.
But when this element is excessive, we may feel ungrounded, anxious, and scattered.
When it is deficient, we may feel heavy-hearted, withdrawn, or emotionally closed off.
That’s why grounding practices and intentional breathwork are essential when working with this element, so we can harness its wisdom without being swept away by it.
💚 The Heart Chakra: Centre of Compassion
Located in the centre of the chest, the heart chakra (Anahata) bridges the lower, physical chakras with the upper, spiritual ones.
It is the sacred meeting place of earth and sky, matter and spirit.
When the heart chakra is balanced, we experience:
💚 Love and compassion for self and others
💚 Emotional resilience
💚 Healthy relationships and forgiveness
💚 Inner peace and kindness
When the heart chakra is imbalanced, we may notice:
💚 Holding onto past hurts or resentment
💚 Fear of vulnerability or rejection
💚 Codependency or emotional withdrawal
💚 Physical tension in the chest or shallow breathing
🛠 Tools to Balance the Heart & Air Element
Here are some beautiful practices to invite more balance into your heart space and align with the flow of air:
🧘♀️ Heart-Opening Yoga Poses: Include postures like Anahatasana (Melting Heart Pose), Bridge, Camel, and Cobra to create expansion in the chest and gently release emotional tension.
🌬 Pranayama (Breathwork): Practices like Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) or Three-Part Breath help create calm, balance both hemispheres of the brain, and allow energy to circulate freely through the heart space.
📝 Journaling for the Heart
Reflect on:
What does love mean to me right now?
Where can I soften or forgive?
What am I ready to release to feel lighter?
💖 Affirmations for Air & Heart
I open my heart to love and allow it to flow freely.
I am safe to feel and express my emotions.
With every breath, I become lighter and expansive.
🌿 Time in NatureWalk in the wind. Sit under a tree. Watch the clouds drift. Let the breeze clear stagnant thoughts and open your heart to the beauty all around you.
✨ Closing Thoughts
As we honour the air element this month, may you find freedom in your breath, peace in your heart, and courage to love more deeply.
The heart is not just an organ—it is your spiritual compass.
And when it is open and balanced, you can connect, forgive, and flourish.
Let the breath be your anchor.
Let love be your guide.
Let the air carry you gently back to your centre.
Love and Lightness,
Ché
